Why do we learn computing?
At Ayrton we believe a successful primary computer user:
- has high expectations of themselves and always demonstrates our values.
- develops creative and technical skills in understanding and applying the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science; analysing problems in computational terms and evaluating information technology.
- accesses high quality computing provision which enables them to develop computational thinking in an ever -changing technological world.
- has opportunities to create deep links to maths, science, and design technology across a range of contexts.
- has repeated practical experience of writing computer programs to solve problems.
- is responsible, competent, confident, and a creative user of information and communication technology.
- has a curriculum that is reflective of individual needs.
Our approach
Implementation
At Ayrton, we:
- Ensure that computing is taught for one hour per week from years 1-6.
- Provide opportunities across all strands within the statutory framework for EYFS during ‘discovery time’.
- Use ‘Purple Mash’ to support the delivery of our computing curriculum.
- Build upon knowledge and progression skills year on year.
- Teach knowledge across the 3 main areas of computer science, information technology and digital literacy.
- Ensure that the computing curriculum is adapted to meet the needs of all learners.
- Ensure that online safety is taught termly across the academy.
Impact
The impact of our curriculum is measured in term of the extent to which children have developed new knowledge, understanding and skills, that they can use and apply effectively. This will be measured by:
- teachers assessing pupils against learning objectives on a half termly basis.
- ensuring that all children leave school with a range of skills to enable them to succeed in their secondary education and be active participants in the ever-increasing digital world.
Enrichment
In addition to the Computing curriculum, enrichment is offered through:
- opportunities for children to become digital leaders and cascade information to their peers.
- a device for all children from years 2-6; developing computer literacy.
- an after-school club which focuses on providing children with a range of technological experiences.
