Why do we learn modern foreign languages?

At Ayrton we strive to:

  • provide a foundation in the French language to equip pupils to study the subject at a higher level
  • foster curiosity and deepen their understanding of other cultures
  • ensure children understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • provide opportunities to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity.
  • find ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions.
  • improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • introduce children to the written language and enable them to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences.
  • ensure all abilities can access the subject using e.g., scaffolds and word banks / pictures to support.

Our approach

Implementation

At Ayrton:

  • we introduce the language in Years 1 and 2, with the aim of teaching children some basic vocabulary e.g., numbers, colours, animals etc to provide a foundation for their learning in Key Stage Two.
  • teachers use PowerPoints with audio of a French person to encourage correct pronunciation
  • we recap learning from previous lessons in the ‘Do Now’ of the subsequent lesson.
  • we revisit topics / vocabulary within and across year groups, building upon prior knowledge.

Impact

In order to measure our success we:

  • use Do Nows to assess what children have retained from previous lessons.
  • use whiteboards during lessons for AFL.
  • assess children’s spoken ability whilst circulating and address any misconceptions or mispronunciation.

Enrichment

At Ayrton we provide:

  • opportunities to learn about French festivals and taste French food.
  • an after-school French club to play games in French, taste French food, experience role-play and learn conversational French.
